The assembly bill page
Open any row on the Assembly Bills list and you land on that bill’s detail page. Everything about one assembly bill (also called a sub-assemblySub-assemblyA reusable assembly block that composes into bigger bills: define it once, include it in any bill of materials, and Assemblified expands it into its own components at execution time. The app now calls it an assembly bill. Read more → ) lives here, split across tabs.

The title bar
Section titled “The title bar”Two controls sit in the admin title bar:
- Pre-manufacture — opens the Quick build dialog against this bill, so you can build units onto the shelf (or take them off it) without leaving the page.
- More actions → Delete — the delete dialog, with its preview and its blockers. See Creating an assembly bill → Deleting one.
The back breadcrumb returns you to the list.
The tabs
Section titled “The tabs”| Tab | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Overview | Identity, stock by location, cost, a structure preview, and what uses this bill |
| Materials | The recipe: raw materials, nested assembly bills, additional costs |
| Locations | Per-location rules. Present only when multi-location adjustments are on |
| Reservations | Safety-stock reservations for this bill, per location |
| Settings | The two behaviour switches, and alerts |
| Versions | Saved snapshots of the recipe |
The tab you are on is reflected in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a specific tab. An old bookmark still works — it lands on the tab that now holds that content.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Identity — name, SKU, description, and the bill’s own identifier.
Stock by location — one row per location, with:
- Available in Shopify — always blank for an assembly bill, with a reason. An assembly bill has no Shopify variant, so there is no store availability to show. This is not a zero.
- Pre-assembled — what is on the shelf at that location. The pencil beside it opens the Quick build dialog in correction mode for that location.
- Can be built — how many units the components available at that location could make.
- Runs out first — the bottleneck: the component that limits that figure.
Where a per-location rule has turned the bill into a shelf at that location, a short note under the pre-assembled number says so.
Cost — the recipe’s cost broken into raw materials, nested assembly bills and additional costs, then two figures: Unit cost (live), calculated from the components as they stand right now, and Unit cost (stored), what was saved at the last recalculation. Work orders close against the stored number. Recalculate writes the live materials cost back to the stored one; additional costs are never stored.
Structure — a preview of the component graph with nested assemblies opened out. Open takes you to the full structure canvas.
Used in — every finished good and every other assembly bill that references this one. This is the list the delete dialog checks against, so it is also the list to clear before a delete will go through.
Materials
Section titled “Materials”Three cards, in the order they are costed.
Raw materials — the lines this bill consumes directly. Columns: Material, SKU, Available, Quantity, Waste, Cost, Total, and a per-line Location override. Add materials offers four sources: Shopify materials, Virtual materials, New virtual material, and Import from CSV/XLSX. Each row’s ⋯ menu has Edit notes and Remove material.
Sub-assemblies — the assembly bills nested inside this one, with Assembly, SKU, Quantity, Buildable, Pre-assembled, Cost, Total and Components. Add sub-assembly opens the picker; bills that would close a loop are not offered, and a save that would close one is refused by name.
Additional costs — cost factors attached to this bill (labour, packaging, overhead). Part of the Enhanced plan.
Both tables have a search bar, keep their column header on screen as you scroll, and — on a shop with more than one location — a location button inside the search bar that switches both tables to one location’s stock at once. Click an Available or Pre-assembled number to see that material’s stock at every location. A number shown as a warning badge means there is not enough for one unit of this bill at that location; on All locations, a line is highlighted when it is short at any location. See Composition → Checking stock on the Materials tab for the details — the tables work the same way on both kinds of bill.
Everything on this tab edits one draft. The save bar appears as soon as you change anything, and blocks navigation until you save or discard.
Locations
Section titled “Locations”A rule answers one question: what does this assembly bill do at this location? One row per location, showing the rule’s Mode, how many material Overrides it carries, and the bill’s Cost here.
The four modes are Inherit (run the base recipe unchanged), Disabled, Pre-assembled only and Made to order. For an assembly bill, Disabled and Pre-assembled only mean the same thing, and the editor says so: bills that use this assembly at that location draw from its shelf there and never from its components. An assembly bill cannot be “not sold” — it sits inside something else, so the traversal has to stop somewhere, and it stops at the shelf.
A rule can also change the recipe at that location: keep a material, remove it, or set a different quantity, waste or location for it, and add materials that only apply there.
See Location rules for the full model.
Reservations
Section titled “Reservations”Create, edit and release safety-stock reservations for this bill, per location. See Safety-stock reservations.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”Preferences holds the two switches, and they are saved together with the save bar:
- Keep assembled on return — cancelled or refunded units go back onto this bill’s pre-assembled shelf instead of being broken back down into raw materials. See Keep-assembled cascade.
- Only consume pre-assembled stock — sales stop at this bill: an order draws only from its pre-assembled stock, and the materials below it are left untouched. Part of the Enhanced plan. See Only consume pre-assembled.
The two are independent. Turning one on says nothing about the other.
Those two are the whole set. Four settings a finished good carries — dynamic adjustment, only sell pre-assembled quantities, maintain inventory level and auto-generate material list — are not available for an assembly bill, because all four are about a Shopify variant and an assembly bill has none.
Alerts — when Alertified is connected, you can be notified when this bill’s pre-assembled stock falls to a threshold. The card is hidden, not disabled, when Alertified is off: it is a separate product rather than a plan tier of this app.
Versions
Section titled “Versions”Every saved version of this bill: what it was made of, how it was configured and which per-location rules it carried. You can compare two versions and restore one. Reading versions is always available; saving, comparing and restoring are part of the Enhanced plan. A restore that would close a nesting loop is refused, the same way a direct edit would be.
See Versions.
