Pushing additional costs to Shopify

Shopify stores its own per-variant cost per item, used for inventory valuation and Shopify-side margin reports. Assemblified can push its calculated cost into that field from two places — and both of them leave additional costs off by default, so nothing about your Shopify data changes until you ask for it.

Why the default is off

Cost per item feeds your accounting. Silently folding labour and overhead into it the day you create your first cost factor would rewrite every margin report you have, with no action from you. So the checkbox starts unticked in both places, every time the dialog opens. Unticked means materials only — exactly the number Assemblified pushed before additional costs existed.

From the Bill of Materials list

The bulk Sync Cost to Shopify action (BOM list → select BOMs → More Actions) shows an Include additional costs checkbox on the preview step.

• It appears only when at least one selected BOM actually has additional costs. If none do, the dialog looks exactly as it always has.
• Ticking it recomputes the New Cost column for every row on the spot — including rows you’d hand-edited. It’s a change of basis for the whole batch, not a per-row toggle.
• Ticked, the pushed value is the BOM’s full cost to make: materials + sub-assemblies + labour + overhead. Unticked, it’s materials + sub-assemblies only.

The record of which basis you pushed is kept with the sync, so a later question of “did that push include labour?” has an answer.

Caution

Reopening the dialog resets the checkbox to unticked. If you always want full cost in Shopify, you tick it on every sync — there’s no shop-level default and no automatic sync.

From a work order

The work orderWork OrderA planned production run: pick materials, build the items, do QC, and complete — all tracked together. Use work orders when you're building stock ahead of demand or running a multi-day project. Read more → ’s Update Shopify Cost action pushes a per-unit cost for each of the work order’s BOM items. It has two independent checkboxes:

Checkbox	Adds
Include labour	Each item’s share of the work order’s labour cost, spread evenly per unit built.
Include additional costs	Each item’s overhead cost factors.

Both start unticked, and you also choose a cost basis — Planned or Actual.

Additional costs have no separate “actual” figure: there is no ledger of what the electricity really cost on the day. So on the Actual basis, the additional-costs figure is still the planned one. The dialog says so — the checkbox picks up a (planned) suffix when you switch the basis to Actual.

Labour is never charged twice

The Include additional costs checkbox adds Overhead-kind factors only. Labour-kind factors reach Shopify through Include labour, because on a work order they’re part of the labour cost.

That’s why the two checkboxes are safe to tick together: they cover disjoint buckets. See labour vs. overhead.

Note

The BOM-list sync has just one checkbox because a BOM has no labour line — a BOM’s Additional costs per unit is both kinds together, which is simply what the BOM costs to make.
